Ubiquiti AirWire Review — True WiFi 7 MLO Speeds Tested
You've got a WiFi 7 access point. You might even have a WiFi 7 laptop or phone. But there's a very good chance you're not getting the most out of WiFi 7 — and the reason comes down to one feature: MLO. Today I'm looking at the Ubiquiti AirWire, a new device that's one of the first on the market to do true simultaneous multi-link operation properly.
Why Most WiFi 7 is Fake
Most WiFi 7 devices on the market — phones, laptops, adapters — only support what's called EMLSR (Enhanced Multi-Link Single Radio). This means they can connect to two bands, but only ever use one at a time, switching between 2.4GHz, 5GHz and 6GHz depending on which is cleanest. That's link switching, not true multi-link operation.
The feature that actually makes WiFi 7 worth the upgrade is STR-MLO — Simultaneous Transmit and Receive Multi-Link Operation. This aggregates both the 5GHz and 6GHz bands at the same time, effectively doubling your throughput. Until the AirWire, there was almost nothing on the consumer or prosumer market that could do this properly.
What Is the AirWire?
The AirWire is a USB-C WiFi 7 client adapter from Ubiquiti. That description does not do it justice. It weighs 537g, has a 0.96-inch LCD display on the front, and features a polycarbonate build with an articulating antenna mount on the back that lets you point it in any direction. On the rear you'll find a data USB-C port, a power USB-C port (or single-port operation is possible), and a factory reset button.

Setup and Adoption
Before plugging in, you need to enable MLO in UniFi Network. Go to Settings → WiFi Networks → scroll to the bottom and find Mesh ML STR → set to Auto. This enables STR-MLO meshing for supported devices only.
Adoption through the mobile app is straightforward — the AirWire appears as a standard UniFi device, updates automatically, and is ready in minutes. Once adopted you can see the mesh parent (in my case a U7 E7), the TX/RX rates per band, air stats, and settings including native VLAN selection. The ability to assign a specific VLAN is a genuinely useful feature — you almost certainly don't want this on your default network.
One hardware note: my Mac Studio has a 15W USB host power limit, which means the AirWire runs in a slightly reduced state without the auxiliary power cable. I tested both scenarios to show the difference.
Test Setup
I tested the AirWire against a U7 E7 access point positioned directly above my desk. Baseline reference was a hardwired 10Gbps connection between my test machine and Mac Studio on the same network — no inter-VLAN routing. Tests were run at three distances: directly under the AP, furthest point on the same floor (~10m, two stud walls), and furthest point in the house (different floor, brick wall, stud walls).
Speed Test Results
The iperf3 results corroborate the speed tests — 3.2 Gbps under the AP and 2.34 Gbps at the far room. File transfer tests (25GB Ubuntu ISOs) gave real-world figures of around 355 MB/s under the AP (equivalent to ~2.8 Gbps) and 255–290 MB/s at distance. The full 26GB transfer from one end of the house to the other completed in under 4 minutes over WiFi.
It's worth noting WiFi throughput fluctuates. These figures are representative, not absolute maximums. The key takeaway is the AirWire consistently delivers close to double the throughput of a standard WiFi 7 phone at every distance tested.
Thermals
The AirWire runs warm — around 50°C / 123°F under load. There are vents at the bottom for passive airflow. For a desktop device that sits on your desk this is fine; it's not something locked in a cabinet. Just don't expect it to run cool.
Spectral Analysis
A bonus feature — the AirWire has a dedicated scanning radio for spectral analysis across 5GHz and 6GHz bands. It shows you SSIDs in range and channel congestion in real time. The 2.4GHz band isn't included which is a slight omission, but for checking whether your 5 and 6GHz channels are clear it's genuinely useful.

Verdict
The AirWire is a specialist tool at a specialist price, and it delivers exactly what it promises. Getting 2.5 Gbps under the AP and nearly 2 Gbps from the far room — consistently — is impressive. The 4.2 Gbps upload result with full 20W power is genuinely remarkable for a wireless device.
It's not for everyone. If you have UniFi WiFi 7 APs, a device that needs multi-gigabit wireless speeds, and a situation where cabling isn't practical — this is the best solution currently available. Nothing else on the market does true STR-MLO in this form factor. The size will put some people off, but the performance justifies it.
For installers and businesses: this has real commercial applications — industrial premises, large offices, rental properties, listed buildings. Worth having in your toolkit to demo to clients who think WiFi can't replace a cable for their use case.
