Multi-Site Warehouse Network & WiFi Deployment

A growing motoring business with warehouse, retail and office operations across multiple sites — struggling with unreliable server access, no warehouse WiFi, and an infrastructure that simply couldn't keep up with the business. InsideWire redesigned and deployed everything from scratch.

Overview

InsideWire was engaged to design and deploy a reliable, scalable network and WiFi solution for a growing motoring business operating across multiple sites. The business relied heavily on local servers, handheld scanners, and internal systems to process stock and manage daily operations.

As the company expanded, the existing infrastructure could no longer keep up. The client was clear: the business was growing, but the network wasn't.

The Challenge

The client was experiencing multiple critical issues across their sites:

  • Slow and unreliable network access to on-premise servers, directly impacting operations
  • No existing WiFi infrastructure suitable for warehouse use — handheld scanners were constantly dropping
  • Concerns around network security and camera system security across sites
  • Infrastructure that couldn't support continued business growth
"These problems were directly impacting operations — particularly during deliveries and in-store stock processing — slowing staff down and creating frustration across the business."

The Solution

InsideWire delivered a full network redesign and deployment, starting from a clean foundation. Key elements included:

  • Designing and deploying new WiFi infrastructure across warehouse, retail, and office areas
  • Rebuilding and reorganising network racks for reliability and maintainability
  • Implementing VLAN segmentation to separate services and improve security
  • Carrying out a full security audit of the existing setup
  • Supporting the gradual migration of services to the cloud to reduce server dependency

Warehouse environments presented particular challenges — old cabling and steel racking filled with parts can severely impact WiFi performance. Careful access point placement and RF planning ensured reliable coverage despite these constraints.

All planning and design was carried out using UniFi Design Center and WiFiman to validate coverage and placement before a single cable was run.

The Results

After deployment, the improvements were immediate and measurable:

  • Stable site-to-site connectivity back to HQ services — server access issues resolved entirely
  • Full WiFi coverage across all warehouse areas — zero scanner dead zones remaining
  • Reliable seamless roaming throughout large warehouse spaces
  • Improved security through properly segmented and locked-down networks
  • Client reported smoother stock processing and fewer operational disruptions
"The client reported smoother stock processing, fewer disruptions, and a network that finally supported how the business actually operates. Most importantly, the infrastructure is now ready to scale as the business continues to grow."

Ongoing Support

InsideWire now provides ongoing managed support for the client, covering both networking and security equipment across their sites. This includes proactive monitoring, firmware management, optimisation, and support as the environment evolves.

The relationship has continued well beyond the initial deployment, with further expansion work already planned as the business grows into new locations.

Key Takeaway

This project highlights the importance of proper planning and design. A stable business network isn't about installing hardware — it's about understanding how the business operates and building infrastructure that supports it reliably, today and in the future.
